In the inaugural year of the Agribusiness Awards, one of Ireland's oldest and most coveted food brands - E. Flahavan & Sons - scooped 'Agribusiness of the Year 2015'.
Longevity is not achieved by accident, Flahavan’s have well over two centuries on the clock, but its passion for innovative ensures that it remains relevant to modern health conscious consumers.
The company dates back to 1785, when Thomas Dunn took over a mill in Kilmacthomas on the banks of the River Mahon in Waterford.
Today it produces porridge oatlets, flapjacks, new quick organic and microwaveable products, while its Multi-seed Porridge range comes in three formats - Quick Oats microwaveable sachets, Portable Porridge Pot and a Multi Seed Porridge Bag.
With a turnover close to €17 million, the business is led by sixth-generation family member John Flahavan.
The Flahavan’s range accounts for about 65% of all cooked oats products sold in Ireland today. A favourite with generations of Irish families, this iconic brand not only plays a leading role in the history of Irish food brands but also in the ongoing development of the country’s agri-food industry.
Flahavan’s employs 55 people and sources from 150 growers, thereby supporting hundreds of jobs in its heartland. It exports to North Ireland, the UK, the US, South Korea, Russia, India, and Spain.
Flahavan's invests in R&D to ensure a strong pipeline of new oat based products. Amongst its latest products are Quick Oats and Quick Oats Organic, Real Fruit Porridge, plus individual breakfast-size portions packaged in sachets, as well as portable Microwave Quick Oats.
Although no strangers to accolades, Flahavan's described winning the ‘Agribusiness of the Year Award’ as testament to the focus it puts on innovation and quality in order to maintain the highest standards.
